Essentials to think about for hiking
Navigation: map, compass, altimeter, GPS device, personal locator beacon (PLB) or satellite messenger
Headlamp: plus extra batteries
First aid including foot care and insect repellent (as needed)
Knife plus a gear repair kit
Fire matches, lighter, tinder and/or stove
Shelter carried at all times (can be a light emergency bivy)
Extra food Beyond the minimum expectation
Extra water Beyond the minimum expectation
Extra clothes Beyond the minimum expectation
The core necessities of hiking:
Proper footwear: Choose hiking boots or shoes that are comfortable, fit well, and provide good support.
Clothing: Dress in layers to stay warm and dry, and bring extra clothes in case of changing weather conditions.
Backpack: Choose a backpack that is the right size for your needs, and pack it with all the essentials.
Water: Bring plenty of water, and consider a water purification system if you’ll be hiking in an area where water is scarce.
Food: Pack high-energy snacks like granola bars, nuts, and fruit, and consider bringing a lightweight stove and fuel if you’ll be out for an extended period of time.
First aid kit: Pack a small first aid kit with essentials like band-aids, gauze, and ibuprofen.
Headlamp or flashlight: Bring a headlamp or flashlight in case you need to hike in the dark.
Sun protection: Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
Emergency whistle: Bring a whistle to signal for help in case of an emergency.
